To Pay or Not to Pay For AI Applications in Radiology

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications have the potential to revolutionize radiology. However, to encourage adoption, providers need motivation and incentives. Some AI applications may provide sufficient benefits on their own, while others may require separate reimbursement from payers. In these cases, payers should develop clear criteria for determining which AI applications should be paid for separately.

This article proposes a framework to help serve as a guide:

  • For payers aiming to establish set of criteria to decide which AI applications should be paid for seperately from underlying imaging studies

  • For technology vendors developing radiology AI applications

"With hundreds of FDA-approved AI applications, only 5 being paid for. It's clear that the current reimbursement system falls short in recognizing the broader benefits of AI in radiology. "
